Death |
- Clarence George Kipp was killed after being hit by a Great Northern passenger train on August 17, 1909. The accident occurred about 1 1/4 miles north of Alvord, Iowa and south of Lester, Iowa. Clarence had gotten up early to obtain help for threshing that he had planned to do that day. He drove a horse and buggy to a nearby neighbor's home. After that he was returning over the same railroad crossing that he had crossed earlier. The wagon road was lined with trees and other growth for two hundred feet before the crossing which obstructed the view of the railroad tracks. It was felt that he did not see the train until it was right on him. When he saw the train he struck the horse with the whip. The horse jumped forward. The train struck the buggy, and the harness was completely stripped from the horse. It is said that the horse survived because it sunk its' toes several inches into the hard road to keep from being pulled under the train. Clarence was thrown 70 feet from the point of impact and 20 feet from the tracks. He died two hours later and did not regain consciousness. He was almost 29 years old. Clarence married Clara C. Smith less than four years before the accident. He was survived by her and two sons. They resided on the farm of her father, John F. Smith. Clarence was the second son of John Wilbert and Susan (Bauman) Kipp. (Based on information from a 1909 newspaper account of the accident.)
